How I Started Reading DAILY

DSC_9684.jpg

When I was a kid I never ever read unless I was forced to. There are only a few books I remember having fun reading in high school, but before those few books I hated reading. I always felt behind or a little dumb for not being a reader and I honestly don’t know why I never really got into it. When I got to college I was introduced to reading Christian books about Theology and that was great! I would read a few of those a year, but it was still so hard to find time. I enjoyed reading, but never really kept up with it because I just didn’t give time for it. When I was preparing to start this business at the end of 2011 saw an interview with Bill Clinton on the books he was reading. He said that millionaires on average read one book a month and that has something to do with their success. I thought there had to be something to reading and working your mind in that way to help with business. Having all sorts of knowledge must be very valuable if millionaires (whom I assume have very busy lives) consistently keep up with reading. So for New Years (2011) I resolved to read one book a month in that year. It didn’t matter what it was, I was just going to read and hope that the habit stuck!

I just so happened to have received a Kindle for Christmas, and my mom has the family sharing a Kindle library so once I got set up, I just picked form something already loaded on the Kindle. I started with Kite Runner and ate it up, and I just kept going and going. Then it was The Help, and then it was all three Hunger Games books (before it became a movie) and I was just hooked. The Kindle made it so easy. I didn’t have to order anything and wait, it was just right there. I remember being so into the Hunger Games that I would read while I was cooking. I remember the water starting to boil for something right when I read the last words to the second book and I just couldn’t wait so I let the water boil and I bought the third book and sat right down in my kitchen to read. In that moment I knew that resolution had stuck and I never wanted it to stop!

I lost my first Kindle on a cruise, and it was SOOO SAD because one of the things I was looking forward to the most was reading in the sun. One of my very favorite things to do is read on the beach. Not really happening right now because I am always running around with kids. There is no such thing as sitting at the beach these days.

My Kindle that I have now is a Kindle Paperwhite and it is the best! I would recommend this over and any E-reader.

There are a few reasons:
You don’t need the lamp or any light on to use it because it is lit up when on and it is easily adjusted.
The light is best for your eyes and sleep because of the direction the light is going. The Paperwhite light goes inward while an iPad would go out directly into your eye and that is why it causes issues with sleep.
It’s small and no glass so it travels perfectly.
It’s cheaper than the Fire or iPad and I personally only want something to read books with.

There is a reason I care about how it treats my eyes and sleep. I only read before I go to sleep. It is the last thing I do and I can’t sleep without reading! Even if I come home super late from a wedding I will still read a page or two, because I now rely on it to shut my mind off. I sleep a lot better because of reading! This time has sort of become “my time.” No kids, husband is asleep, I am curled up under my covers with a fan on full blast (all year long) and I have my Kindle.

Next time you see me ask me about my favorite books! I LOVE talking about them!
